Ke Huy Quan is ready for ‘The Goonies’ sequel!

As an ‘80s kid, it’s no surprise that The Goonies (1985) sits near the top of my all-time favourite films. This cult classic continues influencing pop culture, inspiring countless movies and TV shows. Even the Star Wars series The Skeleton Crew, which was basically The Goonies in Space. And I loved every second of it.

For as long as I can remember, there have been whispers of a Goonies sequel. Most of the original cast has expressed interest in reprising their roles. Yet, despite years of rumours and speculation, nothing has ever materialised.

But now, it seems there’s a real chance. Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly developing new films for The Goonies and Gremlins. Christopher Columbus, who wrote the scripts for original films, is actively working on a Gremlins follow-up. As for The Goonies, a treatment for a potential new film has allegedly been written, though it remains unclear whether it will be a sequel or a complete reboot.

Ke Huy Quan, who played the lovable and gadget-obsessed Data, recently provided an update while promoting his latest film, Love Hurts. Speaking to Collider, Quan shared that the original cast—and even Steven Spielberg—are eager to return:

“That’s on all of our minds. I’ve spoken to everybody, and especially our head Goonie, Steven Spielberg, who also wants to do one. We are all on board. And like you just said, because it’s such a beloved movie, we want to make sure that we have a really good script that can live up to the original. Honestly, it seems like every few years without fail, there’s always a Goonies rumor.

Hopefully, we can manifest it. Hopefully, it will come to pass. I will be the first one there. I would love to revisit Data and, of course, to be able to go on another incredible adventure with my fellow Goonies. I’m all for it.”

Personally, I’d love to see a direct sequel rather than a reboot. Imagine the original cast, now adults, embarking on a wild new adventure. Or better yet, joining their kids on one. With the whole gang willing to return, it would be a shame not to bring them back for another treasure hunt.

What do you think? Would you prefer a sequel, a reboot, or something completely different for The Goonies? Let me know in the comments!
