Freddie Prinze Jr. reveals role in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ sequel.

It was recently announced that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. would be reprising their roles of Julie and Ray in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. The film, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, will directly follow the 1988 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. We’ve now got more information on what their involvement will be.

During a recent interview with Scale Talk Podcast with David Miniatures, Prinze Jr. was asked about returning for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel. In confirming once more that he and Hewitt would return to their roles, he added they would not actually be “the leads” of the new film. Still, the pair will be a driving force enforcing the new cast of characters as they deal with the latest incarnation of The Fisherman Killer.

Prinze Jr. explained, “She just took such good care of Love’s character, Julie James, and my character, Ray Bronson. They’re not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination. [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] made them such a powerful pushing forward of the other cast. It’s not like, “Oh, here’s the Ray and Julie movie that we deserve.” That doesn’t even make sense. That guy’s dead. So it has to be a new generation. And the way she sort of laces us in there with them is just beautifully done. The script is wonderfully written”

Judging from Freddie Prinze Jr.’s comments, the sequel is tearing out a page from the playbook of the recent Scream movies. Initially, it was hinted that the sequel would follow a new set of characters encountering Ghostface. But it was quickly revealed that most of them were relatives of characters from previous Scream instalments; most notably, Melissa Barrera’s Sam was the daughter of Ghostface killer Billy Loomis. While several legacy cast members returned, the focus remained on the new generation of characters.

While Prinze Jr. and Hewitt won’t be the main leads, it will be interesting to see how they will blend into the storyline of the upcoming sequel. Could they be related to one or two of the new characters?

Additionally, Freddie Prinze Jr. confirmed that the original Fisherman killer, Ben Willis, is actually dead. This was left ambiguous at the end of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. If this is indeed true, it means we have a fresh new killer on the loose.

Now, if only they could convince Brandy to return!
