First Look! HBO drops a trailer for ‘The Last of Us’ season 2.

It’s been a hot minute, but we finally have the latest trailer for The Last of Us season 2, which doesn’t hold back. It immediately teases some massive repercussions for Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey). While I’ll keep things as spoiler-free as possible, anyone familiar with The Last of Us Part II knows that what’s coming is nothing short of devastating.

Season 2 picks up in Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel and Ellie have settled after the brutal events of Season 1. However, their seemingly peaceful life is built on a lie that Joel told Ellie to protect her. At the end of Season 1, Joel rescued Ellie from a Firefly hospital, where doctors planned to remove a part of her brain in an attempt to develop a cure for the Cordyceps infection. Instead of letting that happen, Joel wiped out nearly every Firefly in the building, including the surgeon preparing to operate on Ellie. Then he told her they had simply given up on the cure.

The trailer hints at how deception lingers beneath the surface of their relationship. Viewers are provided glimpses of Joe and Ellie’s life in Jackson, with moments of warmth, connection and tension. However, the weight of Joe’s lie will shape much of this season’s emotional journey, adding another layer to their already complicated bond. This season will push its limits like never before.

The season introduces several new characters, each playing a crucial role. The most notable is that of Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever. While her appearance in the trailer is brief, it is significant enough. Fans of the game are more than aware that this character’s introduction brings consequences that will send shockwaves through Joel and Ellie’s world.

The trailer delivers everything fans have been hoping for. Action sequences, stunning post-apocalyptic landscapes, the emotional depth we’ve come to expect from the series, and just the right amount of mystery to tease what’s coming. The stakes are clearly higher, not just in terms of action but also in the story’s emotional weight.

The trailer makes one thing clear. Buckle up! Because we’re in for one hell of a ride. It’s going to be brutal.
