The latest ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ trailer looks stunning!

After teasing audiences with a brief look during the Super Bowl, Universal Pictures has finally dropped the full trailer for its live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. And honestly? It looks absolutely stunning.

Here’s the thing, what this remake seems to have going for it is an undeniable love and respect for the original. From what we’ve seen so far, it’s clear that director Dean DeBlois, who not only co-directed the 2010 animated classic but also helmed its sequels, has done everything in his power to recapture the magic of the original while expanding on it in ways that only live action can.

While the trailer features plenty of shot-for-shot recreations from the animated film, there is new footage that provides glimpses of DeBlois is expandning on the animated source material, specifically developing the character of Astrid played by Nico Parker. Not to mention there’s plenty of shots of Mason Thames‘ Hiccup and Toothless, showing that their bond is central as ever and will without a doubt be the source of a tear or two.

Everything we’ve seen so far definitely lands differently compared to, say, Disney’s string of live-action remakes. In particular, it looks like How to Train Your Dragon has learned from The Lion King’s missteps and avoided going full hyper-realistic with the dragons. Instead of stripping them of their expressive charm, Toothless and the rest of the dragons retain their personality, which might just be what makes this adaptation work.

There’s still plenty of room for debate (as there always is with remakes), but from what we’ve seen so far, How to Train Your Dragon seems to be flying in the right direction.
